While he got his start on MadTV and starred in a few comedy specials, many people know two main things about Artie Lange: the comedian was on The Howard Stern Show for years... and his nose looks painful. To say that Lange has had a tough time would be putting it very mildly. Lange struggled when he quit the radio show and then Lange and Stern fought for a while.
After years of using drugs, Artie Lange has been very open about the appearance of his nose. However, it turns out that he doesn't want to have surgery so his nose will look the way that it used to. Here's why the comedian made that decision and what he has said about his past.
Why Doesn't Artie Lange Want To Get His Nose Fixed?
In September 2019, TMZ reported on the reason why Artie Lange doesn't want to fix his nose.
He was very clear about wanting his nose to show the hard times that he experienced and the fact that he struggled with substance abuse for such a long time.
Lange said:
"I accidentally snorted glass once which is a long story... I got punched in the nose by a guy collecting money for a bookie."
RelatedThese Were Artie Lange's Worst Moments On The Howard Stern Show
Although Artie Lange turned into a fan favorite, he did take things a little too far on 'The Howard Stern Show' at times.
According to Page Six, Lange elaborated on this story in an interview on the Are We Still Talking About This? podcast. It sounded scary and is an example of the difficult times that he has had in his life. He said that he was supposed to pay $62,000 to a bookie and a 19-year-old "kidnapped" him and wanted $100,000. Lange said that he told him “You’re just a kid, like, this was a dumb plan." He added, "Like, I actually felt bad for him and he got kind of scared and he left. He left me in his van.”
Lange added in his interview with TMZ that he was suffering for a long time:
"Even if you make some money and have some success you can still end up living like a straight-up scumbag. I was never a bad person but I did a lot of bad things because I was addicted to drugs."
Artie Lange has shared a lot about his nose over the past few years. In December 2018, Page Six reported that the star tweeted a picture of his face and fans were able to see that his nose looked like it was in bad shape. He said that he didn't have a septum anymore, which is heartbreaking to think about.
Lange talked about his struggles in a 2008 interview with NPR's Terry Gross and shared some sad details. While he talked about his memoir "Too Fat To Fish," which was published that year, he also talked about how he realized that he had to open up when talking to a therapist. This was part of his recovery.

As a guest on the Howard Stern Show, Artie Lange exploded with laughter when Donald Trump revealed that he gets the most beautiful women in the world.
Lange said something that many can probably relate to. It can be really tough to be vulnerable in a therapy session.
But talking to someone is definitely helpful when it comes to processing tough feelings and getting through challenging moments in life. He said that in the past, therapists hadn't helped him, but that changed. Lange explained:
"Everyone who knows anything about therapy, they tell you that if you're not being honest with them, you're not going to get any help, you're wasting your time. It has never been effective for me, therapy. This is the longest I've tried it. I go the first couple of times, I spill my heart out, I talk about my father, or whatever, and then by the third time it's just me and some dude in the room, and I'm talking about my feelings."
Artie Lange's TV and movie roles:
- played himself in Crashing (2017-2019)
- Scott Siegal in Entourage (2007)
- played himself in The Jim Gaffigan Show (2015-2016)
- Mike Shea in Rescue Me (2006-2007)
- wrote and acted in MadTV (1995–1997, then again in 1999 and 2009)
Did Artie Lange's Problems With His Nose Affect His Career?
Artie Lange hasn't acted since he played himself on the HBO comedy series Crashing, which starred Pete Holmes as a young comedian getting his start in the industry. Was there a reason why he took a hiatus?
According to NJ.com, Holmes and Judd Apatow were interviewed on the SiriusXM Jim Nortons and Sam Roberts Show and talked about what Lange went through. They shared that when Lange filmed Crashing, his nose looked different in various scenes. Holmes talked about shooting Crashing and showed Lange a lot of compassion.
RelatedArtie Lange's Most Offensive Interview Of All Time Wasn't Even On The Howard Stern Show
Artie Lange was interviewed by Joe Buck in 2009 and unleashed a slew of offensive comments for more than fifteen minutes.
Holmes said:
"Yeah, we're concerned about Artie for sure. His nose looks awful and he's in pain and he's suffering."
Holmes added that he was impressed with Lange's acting on Crashing and sounded like he really cared about his co-star.
He added in the interview:
"From scene to scene, there were nose continuity issues. Again, not trying to be funny, it's just a fact and again my heart breaks for Artie..."
Apatow said that there was a Crashing storyline about Holmes talking to Lange about the struggles that he went through. As Apatow explained, the hope was that people would see the TV series and think twice about using substances.
Artie Lange did seem to take a break from acting as it has been quite a few years since he starred in anything. However, according to his IMDb page, he was cast in the movie The Lost Ship, which the website states will be released in 2024.
Lange was able to get back to his comedic roots after leaving rehab in 2019. In September of that year, People reported that Lange tweeted about leaving rehab. He wrote:
"Great to be home! 7 months 14 days sober but one day at a time. Lots of new stories to tell. Will announce some new tour dates on Friday. Thanks for the support. Love you all."
After that, he tweeted about new tour dates in Providence, Long Island, and other East Coast areas. It's hard to find information about any further tour dates, but it's possible that Lange took a break after that because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
